Why you need to install the Big Sur and Catalina security updates

Posted December 14, 2021 | Mac

If you are running Monterey you will probably be aware that there is an update to install – macOS 12.1 is here now (read about what’s in Monterey 12.1). That doesn’t mean that macOS Big Sur and Catalina users have nothing to do though. Apple has a security update for them too.

Apple usually maintains the previous two versions of the macOS with security updates, so a release at the same time as the update to the current macOS is typical.

Version 11.6.2 of Big Sur closes 31 vulnerabilities, according to the list published by Apple. Affected are, among other things, the kernel, Bluetooth, Color Sync, Core Audio, the graphics drivers, the 3D system component Model I/O, the Sandbox, the Script Editor and TCC, responsible for privacy settings.

The list for macOS Catalina is not much shorter: 27 gaps are closed. The same system components as the update to macOS Big Sur 11.6.2 are affected.

Due to the many gaps now closed, it is highly recommended to install the updates as soon as possible.
