Spotify Launches in India With On-Demand Playback for Free Users

Posted February 27, 2019 | Music + Videos | Spotify | Spotify India | Windows

Spotify is launching in the world’s second-most-populous country this week. The company quietly started rolling out its service in India earlier this week.

Spotify’s launch in India is quite a big deal — the company’s music streaming service has long been missing in the country, with its main competitors like Apple Music operating in the country for a while. And with local music streaming services operating in the country, Spotify’s launch in India will make things even more competitive.

Spotify is offering an experience tailored for the culture in India. The service offers a variety of Bollywood-focused playlists which are curated with songs from Indian movies. The company also offers city-based algorithmic playlists, keep tracking of what’s trending in major cities like Mumbai and Delhi. Keeping up with the Bollywood-focus, it will also offer new “Starring…” playlists with songs from movies starring some of the most popular actors.  There will also be a number of other playlists that focus on local music.

But a highlight feature of Spotify’s Indian service is the ability to play every song on demand for free users. So even if you are not paying for Spotify Premium, you can play any song whenever you want. This will likely change in the future, but for now, it’s going to give Spotify a huge advantage over its competitors.

And since there are a number of different languages throughout India, the company’s app lets users choose a preferred language from Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu, so that Spotify can correctly provide algorithmic playlists based on the user’s preferred language.

Even in terms of pricing, Spotify is being really smart. The service costs 119 rupees (around $1.67) a month, but there are other options as well. Users can get single day access for only 13 rupees ($0.18), a week for 39 rupees ($0.55), a single month for 129 rupees ($1.81), three months for 389 rupees, six months for 719 rupees, or a year for 1,189 rupees. There are a bunch of different plans here, and Spotify’s also offering a 50% discount for students.
