Spotify is testing a new “Offline Mix” feature that will automatically download a mix of recently played songs users can listen to while offline. Looking to get some early feedback about it, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek teased the new Offline Mix feature on Twitter yesterday.

The image in Ek’s tweet shows a playlist that’s 3 hours and a half long, which should be more than enough for those rare moments when you could end up without an Internet connection.

As of today, Spotify lets Premium members download up to 10,000 tracks to listen offline (free users can only download podcasts). However, in case you’re not used to doing that, having Spotify automatically download your recently played songs might be quite useful.

Spotify won’t be the first music streaming to experiment with such a feature. Four years ago, YouTube Music Premium launched a “smart downloads” feature that automatically downloads up to 500 favorite songs when users are on WiFi.

Spotify, which had 210 million Premium subscribers in Q1 2023, is trying other things to keep users hooked to the service. A new AI DJ is now available in beta in the US, UK, and Ireland, and the feature provides a curated selection of music throughout the day mixed with comments from an AI DJ voice.
