Sony is Testing Cloud Streaming for PlayStation 5 Games
Sony announced today that it started testing cloud streaming for PlayStation 5 games. As of today, Sony lets PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers stream a collection of PS4, PS3, or PS2 games on a PlayStation console or PC, but streaming PS5 games isn’t possible yet.
According to what Sony said today, cloud streaming for PlayStation 5 games will be available for games available in the PlayStation Plus game catalog and game trials. But it will also be available for eligible PS5 games players own.
“When this feature launches, cloud game streaming for supported PS5 titles will be available for use directly on your PS5 console. That means as a Premium member, it’ll be easier to jump into your favorite games without downloading them first onto your PS5 console,” said Nick Maguire, VP, Global Services, Global Sales and Business Operations, SIE. “Our goal is to add this as an additional benefit to PlayStation Plus Premium as part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the value of PlayStation Plus.”
Sony offering PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers the ability to stream eligible PS5 games they own should be a welcome new perk. As you may remember, Microsoft previously made a similar promise to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members, but it has yet to materialize.
“We’re excited to share that later this year, it’s our intent to roll out the ability for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members to play, from the cloud, select games they already own or have purchased outside the Xbox Game Pass library,” Microsoft said back in June 2022. It’s not clear what’s preventing the company from finally offering this feature, but things may finally change now that Sony is planning to do the same.
