Sony Announces a PlayStation 5 Handheld, Sort Of

Posted May 24, 2023 | Playstation | PlayStation 5 | Windows

During its PlayStation Showcase today, Sony announced that it will ship an 8-inch portable gaming device later this year. But the device, currently known by the codename Project Q, isn’t a standalone portable gaming console. Instead, it will be used to stream games that are installed on a PlayStation 5.

“Project Q is a dedicated device launching later this year that enables you to play any compatible game installed on your PS5 console using Remote Play over Wi-Fi,” the firm announced. “With a vibrant 8-inch LCD screen capable of up to 1080p resolution at 60 fps, the device delivers crisp visuals and smooth gameplay streamed from your PS5 when you’re away from your TV. All of the buttons and features of the DualSense wireless controller, including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, are featured on the device.”

To be clear, games must be installed first on a PS5. But that’s about it for the details: there’s no word on pricing, let alone the exact timing of the release or the final name of the product. And it’s not clear if game streaming will work out in the world or if you must be on the same Wi-Fi network as your PS5.

Sony also announced its first-ever official PlayStation wireless earbuds, which it says will bring “next-generation audio immersion” with “lossless audio with low latency for a high-quality audio experience” on PS5 and PCs, plus Bluetooth audio on smartphones. There are no other details about this product yet either.
