Sonos Move Is the Company’s First Speaker With Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Posted September 5, 2019 | Hardware | Music + Videos | smart home | Sonos | Sonos Move | Sonos One SL | Sonos Port | Windows

Sonos is today introducing three new products. The highlight, however, is the new Sonos Move. The company’s new $399 speaker that works both indoors and outdoors.

As expected, Sonos Move is meant to be a portable speaker. The device has a sleek design that we have seen on other Sonos speakers in the past, and there’s even a handle at the top of the device that you can use to carry the device when you head out. The device comes with a charging dock and you can place it there to charge the device easily.

But since the Sonos Move is meant for outdoor playback, you can take it out with you and the battery of the device is expected to support ten hours of continuous playback which is pretty great. There’s even an automatic “suspended mode” that helps the battery last up to five days when not in use.

Sonos Move also comes with AirPlay 2 support, but more importantly, it supports Bluetooth. This is the company’s first device to support Bluetooth streaming, so you will finally be able to play music on it without needing a WiFi connection. The device does also come with Alexa and Google Assistant built-in, but that only works over WiFi.

Sonos says the new Move is pretty tough, with an IP56 rating that states the device is durable enough for falls, rain, dust, dirt, UV, and extreme temperatures.

Specs-wise, the Move features two Class-D digital amplifiers and a mid-woofer for the premium sound quality you’d expect from Sonos. There’s even automatic Trueplay tuning that allows the device to adjust the audio to your environment, ensuring good sound output even when you are outside.

Sonos is also introducing the new One SL speaker today, which is essentially the Sonos One without the personal assistants. That means it doesn’t come with any built-in microphones, which will be perfect for those who want a little more privacy. It does support AirPlay 2 and playback from Sonos’ apps, of course. It will replace the Sonos Play:1, too, by the way.

And then there’s the Sonos Port, the company’s successor to the Sonos Connect. It now offers richer sound, with an updated digital-to-analogue converter and 12V trigger, as well as AirPlay 2 support. You can simply connect it to your traditional stereo system to play stream music on it via AirPlay or your Sonos app.

Sonos says the new Sonos Move will be available starting September 24 for $399, while the One SL will sell for $179 on September 12, and the Port will be available for $399 on January 2020. You can pre-order them all today.
