Samsung Launches Galaxy SmartTags+

Posted April 8, 2021 | Android | Hardware | Mobile | Samsung | Samsung SmartTags | Windows

Just three months after it launched its SmartTag Bluetooth tracker, Samsung announced a new version, SmartTag+, that also supports Ultra-Wideband technology.

“Galaxy SmartTag+ is equipped with both Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology so that it can pinpoint the location with greater accuracy,” the Samsung announcement notes. “It also uses augmented reality (AR) technology to visually guide you towards where your missing item is located using your smartphone’s camera.”

The SmartTags platform is similar to that offered by market leader Tile, and Apple has long planned to release a similar product called AirTags that will also support the more accurate UWB. Samsung says it will sell SmartTags and SmartTags+ side-by-side, and that the new version doesn’t replace the original because it requires a UWB-powered phone. Only Samsung’s newest and most expensive handsets currently support UWB.

“UWB is a true game-changer, making it possible to lock onto the position of an object with much greater precision,” Samsung executive vice president KJ Kim says.  “That’s why we’re continuing to expand UWB throughout the Galaxy ecosystem, finding new ways to leverage this technology to help make people’s everyday lives easier and more convenient.”

SmartTag+ will be available starting April 16 with prices starting at $39.99.
