Samsung Brings Calm to Its Health App

Posted March 5, 2019 | Android | Mobile | Samsung | Samsung Health | wearables | Windows

Samsung announced that it will integrate the functionality of the Calm mobile app into Samsung Health, which is currently distributed on tens of millions of Samsung handsets.

“Our work with Calm is going to make it easier than ever for Samsung Health users to practice mindfulness, so they can work towards achieving better overall health,” Samsung corporate senior vice president Peter Koo said in a prepared statement. “We’re excited to be partnering with Calm, a true innovator in the mindfulness space, to support better mental health for consumers around the world.”

Calm, if you’re unfamiliar, is a popular mindfulness/meditation app that boasts over 40 million downloads. It’s currently the top-rated such app in the Google Play Store, and comes in both free and premium versions. (Calm Premium is $60 per year or $300 for a lifetime subscription.)

What Samsung is doing is integrating Calm’s functionality into the Samsung Health app. The idea here is that you can access Calm’s various services using a new Mindfulness icon in your central health and fitness portal and not need to hunt around for a separate app. Since there’s no mention of this, I assume that you’ll still need to pay for Calm Premium if you want full access to its functionality.

Samsung says that its users will be able to “access their favorite Calm meditation programs through Samsung Health on their smartphones, and use the Galaxy Watch Active to pause and play meditation sessions and track their stress levels after a session ends.”

Calm is now live in Samsung Health on Galaxy S10 and other smartphones running Android 9 Pie in Australia, Hong Kong, India, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, U.S., U.K. and Ireland. Calm integration will be also available to Galaxy Watch Active users when that device ships, Samsung says.

You can download Samsung Health from the Google Play Store or Samsung Galaxy Store if you don’t already have too many health and fitness apps on your handset.
