Qualcomm Announces Snapdragon Satellite

Posted January 5, 2023 | Android | Mobile | Qualcomm | Qualcomm Snapdragon | Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 | Windows

Snapdragon Satellite will use satellite connectivity to support two-way global emergency messaging on flagship phones based on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset.

“Robust and reliable connectivity is at the heart of premium experiences,” Qualcomm senior vice president Durga Malladi says. “Snapdragon Satellite showcases our history of leadership in enabling global satellite communications and our ability to bring superior innovations to mobile devices at scale.”

Snapdragon Satellite will debut in flagship smartphones in the second half of 2023, Qualcomm says. It utilizes Iridium’s weather-resilient L-band spectrum for uplink and downlink, and it will support 5G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN), as this type of satellite infrastructure becomes available. It will also expand to other devices in the future, including laptops, tablets, IoT, and vehicles.

Snapdragon Satellite will become a feature of the Snapdragon Connect program alongside its 5G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth capabilities, and will be integrated into future Snapdragon modem chipsets.
