This spring Apple shut down the production of the iMac Pro, the version of the iMac targeted at professional creatives, but now it looks like the iMac Pro may make a return. However, it may just be the name that is being revived as a new name for the larger iMac model.

If we are to believe the technology leaker Dylandkt a new iMac Pro will be launched sometime during the first half of 2022.

The design of the new iMac (Pro), as he refers to it, is said to be similar to the design of the Pro Display XDR and the 24in iMac with its range of colours. Notably Dylan refers to Dark bezels, which will be a contrast to the 24in model’s white bezels.

In addition, the so called iMac (Pro) will offer a 27in screen with backlight mini-led and the ProMotion feature found on the 14in and 16in MacBook Pro (and the iPhone 13 Pro and Max, and iPad Pro). We are disappointed that these rumours don’t indicate that the screen will be any bigger than it is currently.

The standard ‘iMac Pro’ model will reportedly offer the same M1 Pro or M1 Max options as the 2021 MacBook Pro models along with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage as standard. The inclusion of the M1 Pro and M1 Max suggests that the new iMac will be able to support 64GB RAM, which is less than the 128GB RAM currently supported though.

Dylan suggests that the iMac will offer the same ports as the 2021 MacBook Pro, which will please many (the 27in iMac currently offers an HDMI and SDXD card so losing these ports would be a big disadvantage). It’s not known if USB-A will remain.

The tweet also suggests that Apple has at least tried out Face ID as an option for the new iMac.

It seems that this new model of iMac Pro will replace the current 27in iMac rather than being a new replacement for the iMac Pro that Apple discontinued.
