Microsoft has just released the January Patch Tuesday updates for Windows 11 and Windows 10. These updates bring mostly security fixes, but Microsoft has also addressed a couple of known issues affecting both versions of Windows.

First of all, Microsoft fixed a Local Session Manager (LSM) issue that was allowing users without admin rights to perform actions that required these permissions. Moreover, Microsoft addressed bugs preventing apps that use Microsoft Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) SQL Server Driver (sqlsrv32.dll) to connect to databases.

On Windows 11 version 21H2 and Windows 10 versions 22H2, 21H2, and 20H2, Microsoft also fixed an issue that was causing some users to see a blue screen during the startup process.

On the security front, this month’s Patch Tuesday updates also include 98 patches for vulnerabilities Windows, Office, and other components. “This volume is the largest we’ve seen from Microsoft for a January release in quite some time,” the Zero Day Initiative pointed out today.

That’s it for this month’s Patch Tuesday updates for Windows 10 and Windows 11. If you’re a Windows Insider, Microsoft also released an update for the Windows Subsystem for Android today. The WSA is now powered by Android 13, and this update should also bring improvements to performance and reliability.

Last but not least, today also marks the end of support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. Windows 7 actually reached the end of support 3 years ago, but Microsoft is finally ending its Extended Security Updates program for the OS today.
