Microsoft is Disabling Internet Explorer on Windows 10 Today

Posted February 14, 2023 | Cloud | Internet Explorer | Microsoft Edge | Web browsers | Windows | Windows 10

Microsoft will disable Internet Explorer for good on Windows 10 version 20H2 and newer today. As the company previously explained, The legacy web browser will be disabled via an update to Microsoft Edge that will be released for both consumer and enterprise users.

Microsoft previously dropped support for Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 10 back in June 2022 (the web browser isn’t available on Windows 11), and the company invited organizations relying on the legacy web browser to replace it with the built-in IE Mode. Anyway, if you didn’t get the memo before, now is the time to move on for good.

After today’s update for Microsoft Edge disables Internet Explorer 11 for good, Windows 10 users who try to launch IE 11 will be automatically redirected to Microsoft Edge. The software giant will also take care of transferring all personal data from Internet Explorer to Microsoft Edge.

Internet Explorer 11 won’t be completely uninstalled on Windows 10 PCs as its engine is still required for running the IE Mode in Microsoft Edge. However, Microsoft said that all IE 11 visual references on Windows 10 will be removed with the upcoming June 2023 Patch Tuesday Update.

In Microsoft Edge, the IE mode will be supported through 2029. All websites developed for Internet Explorer 11 should continue to work through the IE mode in Edge until that date, and Microsoft says that it will give organizations a one-year notice before deprecating Edge’s IE mode.
