Lenovo Unveils Refreshed ThinkPad Line

Posted January 4, 2018 | CES | Hardware | Lenovo | Lenovo ThinkPad | Windows

Ahead of CES, Lenovo is revealing its refreshed line of ThinkPad laptops and monitors today. The company the 2018 lineup is the “most complete” ThinkPad lineup ever, featuring improved performance and security features across the board.

Lenovo is upgrading the ThinkPad line with the latest 8th gen processors from Intel this year. The company is introducing a new “ThinkShutter” webcam cover for its devices which you can use to cover your webcam when you are concerned about your privacy. Support for USB Type-C charging is supposed to a big part of this year’s ThinkPad line as well. The refreshed ThinkPad line includes a bunch of design improvements, combined with broader Windows Hello support, too. Here’s an overview:

  • ThinkPad X (X380 Yoga, X280): The new X280 is 20% lighter, and 15% thinner than its predecessor, still providing up to 16.6 hours of battery life. Both the device boast support for Rapid Charge, promising to charge up to 80% in just an hour. This year’s X380 Yoga includes improved support for the Active Pen stylus and promises to offer up to 13.5 hours of battery life as well. Both the devices go on sale this month, with the X280 starting at $999 while the X380 Yoga starts at $1,459.
  • ThinkPad T (T480s, T480, T580): All of the ThinkPad T devices now include the ThinkShutter for extra privacy, and there’s the usual IR scanner plus a fingerprint scanner for Windows Hello. You can apparently get up to 27 hours of battery life on these devices, too. This year’s ThinkPad T580 comes with an optional discrete GPU that can power UHD displays. All the three devices go on sale this month, starting at $989, $1,269, and $1,079 respectively.
  • ThinkPad L (L380 Yoga, L380, L480, L580): Thinner and lighter designs across the board, combined with new optional multi-touch displays and 8th gen Intel Core processors. For added performance, you can get a discrete GPU from AMD on the larger ThinkPad 580. The refreshed line of ThinkPad L devices goes on sale next month, starting at $549, $449, $779, and $769 respectively.
  • Others: Lenovo is introducing a new docking station, one new premium ThinkVision 32u 4K UHD monitor for $1,349, a slightly more powerful Lenovo Tablet 10, and the ThinkVision X24 FHD monitor.

This year’s refreshed ThinkPad line boasts some pretty sweet changes as you can see from all the details above. But put simply, this year’s ThinkPad devices are all about improved security, enhanced performance, and thinner designs.

Friendly reminder: Lenovo’s big announcement this CES is expected to be the unveiling of its new Windows on ARM laptop — so stay tuned for that.
