With CES 2023 now underway, Intel has announced its 13th Gen Core mobile processors, which will again come in U-, P-, and H-series variants. Among them is the Core i9-13980HX, which the microprocessor giant describes as the first-ever 24-core processor for a laptop and the world’s fastest mobile processor.

“The 13th Gen Intel Core mobile processor family delivers unrivaled, scalable performance for leadership platforms across all laptop segments,” Intel executive vice president Michelle Johnston Holthaus says. “With our industry-leading technologies and unmatched global partner ecosystem, people can expect a high-caliber mobile experience in new and unique form factors, so they can game or create from anywhere.”

The new processor family supports turbo frequencies of up to 5.6 GHz, the fastest ever for a mobile processor, and performance gains of 11 to 49 percent over previous generation chipsets. They can be had in configurations of up to 24 total cores—8 performance cores and 16 efficient cores—and support up to 128 GB of DDR5 or DDR4 memory. They include Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, and Thunderbolt 4 capabilities, and the HX and HK variants can be overclocked.

Select designs based on 13th Gen Intel Core processors will also feature an Intel Movidius vision processing unit (VPU) that was co-engineered with Microsoft for Windows Studio Effects. This technology frees up the CPU and GPU for other workloads.

Intel says that PC makers like Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Razer, Republic of Gamers, Samsung, and others will ship 300 unique designs based on the 13th Gen chipsets this year. The firm also revealed a new Intel Processor N-series processor family that replaces its Pentium and Celeron chipsets; 50 low-end PCs based on this processor family are expected in 2023 as well.
