Google Starts Rebranding its Duo App to Google Meet

Posted August 4, 2022 | Cloud | Google | Google Duo | Google Meet | Mobile | Windows

Google has started rebranding its Duo app to Google Meet on iOS and Android. As the company announced two months ago, Google Duo is picking up all the features of Meet and the combined app is also being rebranded to Google Meet.

The Google Duo app already received an update last month which added the new Meet features, but the name and icon change didn’t happen until now. After updating the app, Google will notify Duo users about the rebranding and remind them that all Duo features remain available, including 1:1 and group video calling using a phone number or email.

Google Meet’s suite of meeting features includes video meetings with up to 100 people, live closed captions, virtual backgrounds, and noise cancellation. Meetings are also cloud-encrypted, and users can also schedule a meeting and send an invite link to other people.

The existing Google Meet app will continue to remain available on mobile devices, but Google will soon start inviting users to migrate to the new Google Duo/Meet combined app. If you’ve been using Google Duo on the web, Google is also planning to redirect all traffic from duo.google.com to meet.google.com in the coming months.

If Google wanted the Duo-to-Meet transition to be as seamless as possible, having two “Google Meet” apps coexisting on mobile for a couple of months is going to be strange. Still, Google really needed to consolidate its different video communication apps to better compete with Zoom and the others, and Google Meet certainly gained more traction than Google Duo thanks to its integration with Gmail and Google Workspace.
