Google is reportedly working on its own version of Apple’s AirTags trackers. Developer Kuba Wojciechowski (via 9to5Google) claims to have found references to Google’s work on support for locator tags in Fast Pair, which is Google’s proprietary standard for quickly pairing nearby Bluetooth devices.

In a Twitter thread, the developer also claimed that Google’s Nest team is working on a first-party tracker codenamed “grogu.” Just like Apple’s AirTags, the device is said to have an onboard speaker to help people easily find valuable personal objects such as keys or bags.

According to Wojciechowski, Google’s tracker may support Bluetooth Low Energy as well as ultra-wideband (UWB) connectivity. UWB is a radio-based communication technology that can offer more accurate location abilities, and Google already integrated this technology into its latest Pixel phones such as the Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro.

Wojciechowski believes that Google’s AirTag-like tracker could be available in different colors. The developer also speculated that the new tracking accessory may be announced during Google’s annual I/O developer conference with a possible release later this fall.

While there are certainly many excellent use cases for tracking devices such as Apple’s AirTags or Samsung’s SmarTags, several reports have also pointed out how easy it is to use these tracking devices to stalk people. Google seems to be aware of these privacy concerns, as 9to5Google reported last year that the company was working on “Unfamiliar device alerts” that would warn Android users about nearby trackers.
