Facebook Takes Another Page Out of Snap’s Book

Posted August 8, 2018 | Facebook | Messenger | Snap | Snapchat | Social | Windows

Facebook is copying Snapchat yet again. The company today launched AR games on Facebook Messenger, where users can play AR video games together.

Messenger’s AR video games work within video calls — when you video call a friend, or a group of friends, you can start playing these AR games within the video call. There’s “Don’t Smile” where the one who can hold a serious face the longest will win, and then there’s “Asteroids Attack” where the one who can better navigate their spaceship will win. That’s just two of the launch titles, but Facebook is also going to launch “Beach Bump” where you will be passing a beach ball between your friends, and a matching cat game called “Kitten Kraze” in the future.

Messenger’s AR video games are much like Snapchat’s Snappables. Facebook’s take on AR video games is really different from Snapchat’s, though. On Snapchat, you get to play an AR game on a snap and send that as a regular snap to your friends. These snaps are “interactive” in the sense that your friends can then get back at you, and compete with you through snaps, instead of through a live video call.

Games have long been a part of Facebook. While they are pretty redundant at this point, Facebook’s modern take on AR video games could help the company bring back the same charisma its gaming platform had years ago.
