Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro Brings Always-On Display And “Dynamic Island” Feature

Posted September 7, 2022 | Apple | iOS | iPhone | iPhone 14 Pro | Mobile | Windows

Apple took the wraps off its new iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus today, which both use last year’s iPhone 13 design and A15 Bionic chip. As expected, though, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max got the biggest updates with a new always-on display and “Dynamic Island” feature.

Dynamic Island is the name of the new pill-shaped cutout replacing the notch on the front of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. This area is used to display notifications and interact with apps working in the background, and it will work across iOS 16.

“Without impeding content on the screen, the Dynamic Island maintains an active state to allow users easier access to controls with a simple tap-and-hold. Ongoing background activities like Maps, Music, or a timer remain visible and interactive, and third-party apps in iOS 16 that provide information like sports scores and ride-sharing with Live Activities can take advantage of the Dynamic Island,” Apple explained today.

Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max replaces the notch with a new interactive area.

For the first time ever on an iPhone, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max come with an always-on display that can show time, widgets, and live activities at a glance. The feature is enabled by a new 1Hz refresh rate and several power-efficient technologies to preserve battery life.

The new 6.1” and 6.7” Super Retina XDR displays on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max also have thinner borders and a peak HDR brightness of 1600 nits, just like Apple’s Pro Display XDR. Apple also announced a maximum outdoor brightness of 2000 nits, the highest in a smartphone according to the company.

Under the hood, the new A16 Bionic chip is Apple’s first 4nm chip with a 6-core CPU, a 5-core GPU, and a 16-core neural engine. The improved triple camera system also includes a 48MP main camera with a quad-pixel sensor that can shoot images in the ProRAW format. There’s also a 12MP ultra-wide camera, an improved telephoto camera, as well as a new TrueDepth camera on the front with an adaptive True Tone flash.

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max support the same Crash Detection and Emergency SOS via Satellite features as the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. In the US, all iPhone models will also ditch the SIM tray in favor of eSIM, which will allow users to easily connect or quickly transfer their existing plans digitally.

Lastly, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will be available for pre-order on Friday, September 9, and they will start shipping on September 16. The iPhone 14 Pro will start at $999 while the Max version will start at $1099.
