Posted January 17, 2023 | Apple | Apple M2 | Mac and macOS | Mac mini | MacBook Pro | Mobile | Windows

Apple has just announced new Mac Mini and MacBook Pro models powered by the company’s latest M2 chips. The new Mac Mini now comes with the same M2 chip previously seen in the 2022 MacBook Air and 13.3” MacBook Pro, but a more powerful version with a Apple’s new M2 Pro chip is also available. The new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, however, feature the same M2 Pro chip available on the high-end Mac Mini, as well as an even more powerful M2 Max chip.

“Only Apple is building SoCs like M2 Pro and M2 Max. They deliver incredible pro performance along with industry-leading power efficiency,” said Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Technologies. “With an even more powerful CPU and GPU, support for a larger unified memory system, and an advanced media engine, M2 Pro and M2 Max represent astonishing advancements in Apple silicon.”

Apple’s new M2 Pro chip offers 10 or 12 CPU cores, up to 19 GPU cores, and up to 32GB of unified memory with 200GB/s of unified memory bandwidth. Apple’s M2 Max chip, however, comes with a 12-core CPU, up to 38 GPU cores, and up to 96GB of memory with a 400GB/s bandwidth.

Apple’s M2 Max chip supports up to 38 GPU cores and up to 96GB of unified memory.

According to Apple, a MacBook Pro with an M2 Pro chip can process images in PhotoShup up to 40% faster than a MacBook Pro with M1 Pro, and up to 80% faster than a MacBook Pro with an Intel Core i9 CPU. Apple’s M2 Pro and M2 Max chips also include a next-generation 16-core Neural engine, a more efficient media engine, and a next-generation Secure Enclave.

There are no changes on the outside for Apple’s new Mac Mini and MacBook Pro models, but all of them now come with Thunderbolt 4 ports, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.3 support. The M2 Mac Mini now starts at a more affordable $599, while the M2 Pro model starts at $1299. The latter comes with four Thunderbolt 4 ports instead of two, with support for up to three displays and one 8K display.

The new M2 Pro and M2 Max MacBook Pros also keep the same design introduced on the M1 Pro and M1 Max models last year. However, Apple now promises up to 22 hours of battery life thanks to its new chips that provide significantly superior performance compared to previous generation Apple Silicon chips. All MacBook Pro models also feature three Thunderbolt 4 ports allowing users to connect 8K displays up to 60Hz and 4K displays up to 240Hz.

The new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro starts at $1,999 while the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro starts at $2,499. All these new Macs are available to pre-order starting today, and they will start shipping next week on January 24.
