Apple Mistakenly Made iOS 17 Developer Beta Available to Everyone

Posted June 6, 2023 | Apple | iOS | iOS 17 | Mobile | Windows

Apple reportedly hit the wrong button when it released the first developer beta of iOS 17 yesterday. As reported by Connor Jewiss on other users on Twitter (via iMore), the iOS 17 developer beta is apparently showing up in the Beta Updates section of the iOS Settings app for users who don’t have a developer account.

This is quite problematic as regular users probably don’t want to install a developer beta on their regular iPhone and risk encountering unexpected issues. Apple isn’t expected to release the first iOS 17 public beta until next month, and this one should have fewer bugs than this first developer beta.

In addition to iOS 17, it appears that the first developer betas of macOS Sonoma and watchOS 10 are also available for non-developers today. As of this writing, Apple has yet to acknowledge the problem, but once it does, the developer betas should no longer be available to all users.

There are many new features in iOS 17 including easier contact sharing via AirDrop, a new StandBy mode when an iPhone is on its side and charging, as well as a new Journal app. Apple is also enhancing its core Phone app with live voicemail transcription, and there are also big improvements for Autocorrect and Dictation.

Even if you can’t wait to try iOS 17, please wait for the first public beta coming next month. In the meantime, you can learn more about what’s new in iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS Sonoma, and watchOS 10 in my previous article.
