AMD Announces RDNA3-based Radeon 7900 XTX and 7900 XT GPUs

Posted November 4, 2022 | AMD | Hardware | Radeon | Windows

AMD introduced its new Radeon RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT GPUs yesterday, which leverage the company’s next-generation RDNA 3 architecture. The new GPUs also use AMD’s new chiplet design that interconnects 5nm and 6nm process nodes that are optimized for specific tasks.

“Featuring an advanced chiplet design, new compute units and second-generation AMD Infinity Cache technology, AMD RDNA 3 architecture delivers up to 54% more performance per watt than the previous-generation AMD RDNA 2 architecture. New compute units share resources between rendering, AI and raytracing to make the most effective use of each transistor for faster, more efficient performance than the previous generation,” AMD explained in a press release.

The Radeon RX 7900 Series GPUs feature up to 96 compute units, and up to 24 GB of GDDR6 RAM with up to a 384-bit memory interface. According to AMD, the flagship Radeon RX 7900 XTX should deliver up to 1.7X higher native 4K performance than the Radeon RX 6950 XT GPU in select titles, while the Radeon RX 7900 XT should provide up to 1.5X higher performance than the Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics card in select games.

Other key features include a second-generation raytracing technology that delivers up to 1.8X more performance than the previous generation. For video editors, AMD’s new GPUs also come with a dual media engine that supports simultaneous encoding or decoding of streams up to 8K60 for HEVC. Support for AV1 hardware encoding is also enabled.

AMD’s new Radeon RX 7900 Series GPUs are also the first flagship GPUs to include a DisplayPort 2.1 port. The future-proof technology supports 4K graphics at up to 480Hz or 8K graphics at up to 165Hz, though we have yet to see displays that support these high refresh rates. AMD did highlight yesterday that Samsung was planning to release an 8K ultrawide version of its Odyssey Neo G9 monitor with a DisplayPort 2.1 port, and we should get more details about it at CES in January.

AMD plans to release its Radeon RX 7900 Series GPUs on December 13. The RX 7900 XTX will be priced at $999, while the 7900 XT will be $100 cheaper. It was probably important for AMD to not go beyond the $1,000 bar as Nvidia’s RTX 40 Series GPUs currently start at $1,199.
